The NMGYB Pickup Game Philosophy
There was a time when pickup basketball happened naturally. You dropped a ball on a court, and kids played until the sun went down. For many girls, that opportunity simply doesn't exist anymore. That's why we intentionally create it.
Our pickup games are designed to be welcoming, organized, and competitive for players of every age and skill level. Girls know when to show up, what to expect, and that they'll have a place to play. From there, the game takes over.
We officiate loosely, using traditional pickup rules, because we want players to solve problems, communicate with teammates, call their own fouls, and learn the game the way basketball was meant to be learned. Depending on attendance, we rotate players, balance teams, and keep games moving so everyone gets meaningful minutes on the court. The best part isn't the basketball. It's what happens because of it.
Older players naturally begin mentoring younger ones. Younger players gain confidence by competing alongside experienced athletes. Leaders emerge. Communication improves. Competitive fire comes out. Girls celebrate great plays, challenge each other, and discover that competing hard and supporting one another can exist at the same time. We've watched girls play years of organized basketball without ever truly learning how to play the game. Pickup basketball fills that gap.
Our philosophy is simple: Learn the skills. Apply them in pickup. Then compete in club basketball. That's the progression we believe develops smarter, more confident basketball players. We've seen it work for years. Now we're creating a place where it can happen every week.
